It is less a book to be read than a workshop manual for leading a successful life. The principles presented could benefit people of any age, background or education. The topics presented are timely and valuable. People from 4 to 64 years of age and all walks of life state how a particular topic affects them in their daily life. Some are humorous such as Ellie who contributed to the section on Responding vs Reacting this way, “I got in a fight with my brother and was so mad I hit him in the head with a metal bat (not very hard). I learned I should respond with my words and not react with anger. I learned this because I felt really bad about hurting Colin and because he pretended to be unconscious and I got in trouble with my mom and dad.” Some are more serious such as Col. Clay Stewart’s contribution regarding communication. All are meaningful and contain valuable lessons.

King has written a book of advice combining principles from Amy Vanderbilt's Book of Etiquette, Covey's Successful Habits, and his own rags-to-happiness life story in this debut book. Although I cannot be completely impartial as Bob includes narratives in each section from people he knows (including me and my husband), I can honestly say that his advice is sage, his examples demonstrate how his advice has worked in other people's lives, and his book is one that would benefit most young people today. His personal stories are self-effacing and humorous, and each section provides space for the reader to reflect on how they might use the information to work toward planning their own path to a successful life.Product details

Very insightful and a great read for children and adults alike. While reading this book, it is easy to think "this is common sense..." but, as King points out, many people do not follow these principles. The humor, writing inserts from various people, and sections of reflection make this book entertaining and easy to understand. The principles contained in this book are imperative to everyone, but are not often thought about; bringing them all together in this simple format is sure to help plenty of individuals and families.
Bob King has managed to write a well organized, succinctly written book supposedly for his grandchildren, but really for everyone. He manages to name things some of us do without thinking, and other things we might struggle with. He offers gentle guidance and practical examples. His vignettes of the real life experiences of others are valuable. I recommend this book as a uesful read for kids, young adults, parents, and yes, even grandparents.
I read this book while on a 6 week international adventure and, as someone who writes travel dispatches and had a career in counseling and human resources, appreciated the bringing together of some basic tenets in how to enjoy a successful life. Because of my background, I had to keep reminding myself who the audience was for this book. On that basis, I had an epiphany that this book will be one of our gifts to our 2 grandsons. This book should be very helpful in providing a foundation for them. King has written this at a level that can be absorbed readily by his intended audience.
I am pleased to write this brief review of Robert King’s book “For my Grandchildren. Principles for a successful life” which was published in 2016.
Bob has been a close friend of mine for the past 3 decades. We worked together in Denver, Colorado for a period of time and have kept in reasonably close touch since I moved away in 1991. For a time when my kids were growing up we frequented Bob and Karen’s home in Summit County and subsequently in Leadville, Colorado to ski with and draw inspiration from them.
Bob has always been the “energy giver” that he writes about. I found his book to be as interpersonally engaging as it was informative, since he writes with the same passionate exuberance that embodies his motivational speaking style. He combines humor and mild self-deprecation with a conscious introspective approach while sharing his insights into his own story of noteworthy success and considerable personal achievement. The reader should quickly recognize how the powers of being attentive and a keen observer and maintaining a positive attitude can transform each one of us to become more successful in our own lives.
On a personal note, I have been a serious student of martial arts for many years and am keenly aware of the five tenets of Tae Kwon Do Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control;, and Indomitable spirit. Remarkably, Bob King has intuitively applied these ancient and enduring building blocks of character in his own approach to life and they are embedded in Chapters 4, 9, 23, 5 and 11 respectively. I am eager to pass along several copies of his book to our young TKD students to help show them that their newfound hobby is also a metaphor for a more successful life.

Very to the point and easy to read. Bought one for each of our 8 grandchildren.
Excellent read. I think anyone who has children or grandchildren needs to pick up a copy of this book and work through it. King explains what he does so well in a straight forward, pragmatic tone, ways to be in the world. Communication is key!
